Männistö AW18 "SAUNA!" presentation

-

Mannisto AW18 SAUNA! unfolds around the story of a boy born in a sauna in the middle of nowhere in Finland, and his life-long dilemma of not knowing where home is. He travels all over the world, but nonetheless feels that something is missing, something is not as it should be. He does not feel at peace in the godforsaken Finnish village nor in larger cities that never sleep.

Mannisto AW18 SAUNA! Presentation plays with nostalgic elements of the traditional Finnish sauna experience, through layered leisure wear and expressive surface prints depicting both sweet and menacing bears, evoking the raw yet cosy log cabin setting.

Fashion Friday

-

Fashion installation and conversation on fashion as the art of identity in the spirit of Grayson Perry.

Fashion is about identity. We all wear clothes to express our personalities, feelings, and belonging to a particular group of people. Following the artist Grayson Perry’s alter ego Claire and the fashion scholar Elizabeth Wilson’s statement of fashioned individuals as “walking collages, artworks and contemporary installations”, Fashion Friday focuses on the question of identity.

How do contemporary fashion designers interpret identity as gendered, sexualized or ethnic?
How about national identity – does it play a role in fashion?

Fashion Friday consists of two parts: a fashion installation curated from the collections of Aalto University’s fashion design students, and a conversation on fashion, art and identity by leading international scholars of fashion.

Speakers:

Professor Hazel Clark, Parsons School of Design (New York)
Curator and fashion historian Shaun Cole, LCF – London College of Fashion (London)
Research Fellow in Sociology of Fashion Anna-Mari Almila, LCF – London College of Fashion (London)
Moderator of the conversation and curator of the installation: Professor Annamari Vänskä, Aalto University

The event is organized in collaboration with Kiasma, Friends of Kiasma and Aalto University.

Entrance with museum ticket (14/12 + 1 eur service fee /0 eur)
Duration of the conversation: 2 hours
Language: English

Arranging Practice: Proximity, Distance, Instance – Panel discussion with HIAP designers-in-residence 2018, Laura Spring and Elina Laitinen

-

To round up their first of two working visits in Helsinki, HIAP designers-in-residence Laura Spring (UK) and Elina Laitinen (FI) will discuss their practices and their upcoming research in the frame of this year’s HIAP design residency programme. Under the theme “Arranging Practice: Proximity, Distance, Instance,” the discussion will center on the designers’ motivations for locating their work in close proximity to their cooperators, tools and materials and attempt to conceptualize this arrangement, exemplary for a momentous current in contemporary design, in view to the historical birth of design by the separation of planner and maker as well as to today’s condition of computation-inspired instantaneous, super-territorial activity.

Panelists: Laura Spring (textile designer/producer), Elina Laitinen (fashion designer), Juuso Tervo (program coordinator UWAS, Aalto University), Leena Svinhufvud (educational curator, Design Museum), Martin Born (curator design residency, HIAP, moderator).

The HIAP design residency programme is produced in cooperation with the British Council, Helsinki Design Week, Aalto University and the Design Museum.
